Matthews’ two-component 3.5 VOC Non-Chromate Etch Primer is designed for direct-to-metal surface application for aluminum and steel. This product etches itself into the surface to provide outstanding paint adhesion and corrosion resistance.

Features & Benefits:

  • Compatible surfaces: aluminum and steel (not recommended for fiberglass)

  • Top coat after 60 minutes
  • Theoretical coverage: 308 sq. ft. per ready to spray gal. @ 1 mil dry film thickness
  • Provides excellent corrosion protection
  • Can be directly coated with all Matthews topcoats
  • Best sprayed through a 1.4-1.8 tip gun

Surface Preparation:

  • Aluminum and steel must be sanded and cleaned before this primer is applied
  • Surfaces should be cleaned with appropriate cleaner prior to applying primer
  • Sand aluminum with 220-320 grit abrasive; sand steel with 180-220 grit abrasive
  • Wash off residue and dry thoroughly before recleaning with appropriate systems substrate cleaner
  • Prime substrate after thorough cleaning
  • Note: Application over sandblasted substrate is not recommended

Federal Regulation Regarding the Use of Heavy Metals

  • A federal EPA regulation came into effect in 2011 regarding the use of five heavy metals in spray-applied primers and topcoats within the sign industry.
  • As of January 2010, all users of these types of products were required to register with the EPA. As of January 2011, regulations regarding these products went into effect. See www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/eparules.html for more information.
  • 3.5 VOC Non-Chromate Etch Primer is similar to our 74 770SP/74 766SP, except that it has no heavy metals.
